Humanitarian update
Europe must not fail Chad
Urgent action is required in Chad as increased insecurity threatens thousands of lives. Our aid effort in eastern Chad, where 470,000 refugees and displaced people are dependent on humanitarian aid, is nearing a total shut down. Europe must go beyond responding to the urgent protection needs of civilians and start working for a negotiated settlement of the crisis.
Program update
Fighting for gender equality in Papua New Guinea
Despite laws prohibiting violence and discrimination against women, there has been little practical application or commitment to them. Oxfam partner HELP Resources is working to bring about change and achieve gender equality for women. Through community-based gender equity workshops, men and women are better able to understand overall gender discrimination and human rights.
Campaign update
UN moves forward on Arms Trade Treaty
Talks starting in the UN offer an historic way forward on conventional arms control. The 28 delegates from every continent will sit on the “Group of Governmental Experts," where they will start their first discussions on a global Arms Trade Treaty. These UN arms control talks must not fail: a thousand people each day die from armed violence.
Campaign update
Oxfam Ambassador Kristin Davis visits South Africa to help break the stigma of AIDS
The AIDS epidemic is the leading cause of death in South Africa, with an estimated 400,000 people dying of HIV-related causes each year. In Kristin Davis' second trip to South Africa, she revisited the strong women and community groups that touched her in Soweto, as well as learning more about how HIV is tackled in South Africa from new groups in rural communities. Oxfam works with local partners to address the AIDS crisis and campaigns on the global level for more doctors, nurses, and community healthcare workers.
Oxfam International is a confederation of 13 organizations working together in more than 100 countries to find lasting solutions to poverty and injustice.
